New green space for Brentwood

I'm delivering a vibrant community pocket forest at Ces Deceau Reserve — and you can help design it!

This $120,000 investment by the Cook Labor Government will transform what is currently a bare block into a thriving green space.

It’s just one of the ways I’m protecting and enhancing our local parks and growing our urban tree canopy right here in Bateman.  This means cooler suburbs, habitat for our wildlife, and quality spaces to play and connect.

Designed by community

Through community design workshops and planting days, you can play a hands-on role in bringing it to life.

Your input will shape:

  • How people move through the space — including nature trails and pathways
  • Seating and gathering areas
  • Play opportunities
  • Accessibility for all members of the community

Planting is scheduled for winter 2026.

What exactly is a pocket forest?

A pocket forest is a compact urban forest based on the Miyawaki method — a planting approach that creates dense, fast-growing ecosystems to boost biodiversity, provide habitat and reduce urban heat.

More than 25 locally native species have been carefully selected to reflect the endemic bushland of this area, and to support black cockatoos and other local wildlife.

Delivered in partnership with Regenerate Australia, this project will establish our community’s first pocket forest — setting a new benchmark for urban biodiversity, habitat creation and climate-resilient suburbs in Bateman and across WA.

The pocket forest will:

  • Increase tree canopy and help reduce urban heat
  • Provide vital habitat for black cockatoos
  • Boost biodiversity and improve local air quality
  • Create a welcoming community place to connect with nature and each other
