Not so fast! A re-elected Cook Labor Government will invest $80,000 to install eight mobile speed advisory signs near our local schools—helping ensure safer streets for every family.
These signs display a smiley face to drivers travelling at or below the speed limit, using a positive approach that’s proven to encourage safer driving in residential areas.
As a parent of young children attending Bateman schools, I know student safety is paramount. Safer streets mean safer kids, and more students riding, scooting, or walking to school!
Since being elected in 2021, I’ve partnered with schools across our community to understand their priorities. Road safety was raised time and again, so last year I convened a School Road Safety Workshop with the City of Melville (responsible for local roads) and several local schools that identified traffic issues as a top concern.
I’m grateful the City of Melville is now responding to my request for potential road treatments and parking improvements. However, driver behaviour—particularly speeding—remains a key issue for many schools.
This new commitment builds on my record of delivering real results:
- Advocated for flashing wig wag lights
- on Riseley Street
- Stood with Deputy Premier Saffioti and Minister for Road Safety David Michael to announce the Cook Labor Government’s $10 million investment to expand 40km/h school zones to all warden crossings
- Successfully advocating for Riseley Street to be included in the first round of
- 40km/h school zone installations
- Facilitated a road safety workshop with The City of Melville and local P&Cs to identify potential local road and traffic treatments
A huge thank you to all our local P&Cs for tirelessly supporting and improving our local schools. Together, we’re making our community safer and stronger.
